PowWeb: Real 300GB?

Post Your Review about PowWeb: PowWeb

hi ,

i making a file hosting site and i wanted to ask .

1- do you really offer 300GB ?
2- if i spend like 40 GB will you fire me ?
3- what is the max cpu load allowed for my site ?

Just one caution on the 300GB —-
It is up to 300GB for files required for/integral to your website; that does not mean 300GB of diskspace to use for storage of incidental material (so, it is not to be used for backups, file storage, storage of downloadable multimedia files, etc.) — the space being used must be used for files “required” for the presentation/operation of your site.

Hosting a file-sharing site or a site which has as its primary purpose the distribution/download of multimedia content will get you into trouble very quickly, since if your site is popular you may tie up webserver port connections for long periods that will result in a busy status for other websites — there are no stated limits — but, whenever your site attracts so much attention that it impacts other users negatively it will be suspended, and/or you may be asked to host elsewhere … I think it is important to know that up-front, because we’ve had some people run afoul of the Terms of Service who would have probably realized they needed dedicated hosting or some other model, instead of the shared webhosting offered by Powweb.

There are no stated limits for CPU utilization, since we are not running on a “server” type architecture where your site sits on a specific server box — instead, Powweb uses a pool-based model so that the load is balanced and the site is served from multiple servers at a time. As Doc notes, all Powweb resources are available with a stated test — you may use them/share them with other users — you may not monopolize them or expect that you will be given “whatever” utilization your site requires at the moment.

As an example, we have had a number of sites which made material available for download , which was public domain (so there no copyright issue), and was essentially a single link on the site — otherwise the site was normal — but the file in question was enormously popular overseas and resulted in 1000’s of connections at a time of a duration of 1-2 hours to download …. the connections saturated a server pool and other websites could not give their typical visitors a connection slot — we suspended the websites in question, since, even though they did not plan to breach the Terms of Service, their website attracted such attention that it could not be hosted on our system without severely impacting other users…

So, the short and long of it is, if you want a large content heavy website with reasonable traffic, Powweb can handle that — if you want a website of large downloads, then you should probably look at a different hosting model.
