[WARNING] FatNetWork — STAY AWAY

By TheBush on WHT:

I would like to warn everyone about this host. I signed up via their eBay auction http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLIMITED-RESELLER-WEB-SITE-HOSTING-BUSINESS_
W0QQitemZ7532180699QQcategoryZ11762QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
which is item number 7532180699. Anyways, so I have been hosting with them on this reseller since July 3rd. First they told me that they would be terminating my reseller on my next billing date because Rick (the owner) beleives Free Hosting isn’t a “real” business. Then I asked if we could make a deal, he said limit to 200 accounts. So I did, I had them wipe everyone, just because I also wanted to change how I went about allowing new signups. So I did it, and I wasn’t going to allow more then 200, because I wanted to be nice, so I had my coder code it so it would only allow 200 accounts. But I went to go setup a personal account, and it gave me an error message saying that I could only create 200 accounts. I was mad, I agreed to only allow 200 free hosting accounts, but I didn’t think my whole reseller would be limited. II went to paypal for a refund, because Rick had told me he wouldn’t be hosting me anymore because he has no interest in hosting free webhosting companies. So I made backups of everyones account, and made a paypal dispute. He refunded immediatly, and then I msged him on AIM. I told him he hadn’t seen the last of me, and I wouldn’t be posting any good reviews about him, and he said this “I hope your family has a lot of money”. I was like whats that suppose to mean, and he told me that anything I say publically will be followed in a suit. I also said “im not some dumbass 15 year old” and he followed it up saying “actually, you are”

He did refund my money, and I appreciate that, but he immediatly terminated all accounts (well suspended them). I mean, I wasnt able to have more then 200 accounts when it clearly says on the eBay auction UNLIMITED DOMAINS: YES!

In any case, I worked with him in the beginning but wasn’t about to ruin my company because he doesn’t beleive in free webhosts.

No matter what, stay away from this host.

It will only cause trouble

Replies:

I have heard a lot of bad things about buying hosting off eBay. A lot of companies that setup there are frauds.

This company also claims to offer unlimited Bandwidth and Storage… Always a red flag

Hope you get things straight

Thanks THRMan.

It also says LiveSupport via AIM on the Auction, but everytime I went to him he told me to submit a ticket, which is alright I guess, but when he started getting mad at me and said this.

“You’ve only been hosting here for a month and I already know your first and last name. I have resellers that have been here for years and I still don’t know their names.”

I mean, personally, I like to know my customers. I like to know my customers, my coders, etc. Its just a trust thing I guess.

We used this company for a while off of ebay just for in-house sites, but they kept moving our sites and they kept going down.
Then they moved our sites to different servers like 6 times in 2 months, which meant even more downtime.

Lousy Service & Lousy Support!!!

Stay away from them!

Just my thoughts,

Derl

Well this is funny

Warning about Canaca

Review from WHT:
by: HaloChat

Hello all,

I recently ran across a case regarding Canaca…

Some background info - I run a website based on the video game Halo - every morning I post news about what has recently been found/noticed/happened. Friday morning, I ran into this case.

A popular moviemaking site, HaloGrid (Also known as Hollywood Halo), made an extremely popular hit. A hit they didn’t expect to be released to more than just their site - and quickly became far too popular. When the owner left for work just after he released that video, he had only used about 12-15% of their 400 GB monthly bandwidth (usage: 48-60 GB). When the owner came back from work - they had used 400 GB MORE than their alotted bandwidth (usage: 800 GB).

(The first problem lies there - the host neither notified him, nor shut his site off… they just let the ticker keep running.)

By the end of the month, they had used 530 GB more than their alotted bandwidth (usage: ~930 GB)… Overage fees awaited. At the time of signing up, the overage fee was $0.50/GB - that’s what they expected to pay. Still a hefty bill, it was doable.

The host sent them a bill - and it wasn’t what they were expecting. The bill came out to $3438.00.

(Keep in mind this is the first time the host has contacted them since they went over by such a large amount)

Turns out - that month, the host just happened to raise their overage prices - by 1100% (making it $6.00/GB)…

(Is it just me - or is this starting to smell fishy)

Numerous phone calls went out to renegotiate this insane bill. The host wouldn’t budge. Finally somebody sent (from what I heard) a quite insulting piece of hatemail, in which the employee agreed to have them only pay $2265. The group (who has to pay the bill) has already received about $400 in donations at the time of writing - many people are being kind enough to donate - (that is not the purpose of this message - I’m just stating it all).

So basically - my warning is this - if you plan to use an insane amount of traffic - don’t use this host. You’ll shoot yourself in the foot the very second you sign up. I wish this group would have known about Web Hosting Talk before they signed up and known about how bad this host was - but they obviously didn’t.

A disturbed witness,

- D-Man

Site 5

Own your hosting company now

by: BlueMushrooms

Someone who read my posts about choosing Site5 for my next host asked for a review. It’s a bit premature, since I’ve only been with them for a couple of weeks, but here ya go. The main site I have with them is http://thehathorlegacy.info.

I signed up on July 3, and my account was set up by the morning of the fourth even though that’s a holiday here in the US. They transferred my basic site files over for me, and when I requested they also transfer the databases, they did.

I had a lot of configuring to do - add-on domains, getting my blog app reconfigured for my new username, etc. I went to Site5’s forums for support, and WOW is that a helpful community. I generally got responses - from the moderator and also knowledgeable users - within minutes.

Tech support (via email, which is SO much simpler than opening a ticket and all that jazz) is even quicker. They’re a lot of help even when it turns out the issue is not on their end. And they don’t just respond quickly - they take action quickly.

My sites are running at a very nice speed, even in Cpanel (where, with other hosts, I waste a lot of time waiting for pages to load as I’m tinkering and updating). I’ve had 100% uptime (except for 20 minutes the night the nameservers moved, which is inevitable when you switch hosts) so far.

All in all, lots of positives and no negatives. I’ll update this thread (or start a new one) at some milestone points.

Site5 is great. My 6 month review will be here soon.

PowWeb? Thanx but no Thanx!

I have been searching on webhosting forums, and saw a post on Webhosting Talk

I will add some comments that are from there:

Just wanted to let any potential customers know about PowWeb’s aweful service. I’ve signed up with them about 1-2 weeks ago, and all I’ve been getting since then is downtimes! Seriously, there haven’t been a single day running normally. Their logs don’t even log the errors, so you can’t even know about them, unless your unhappy customers let you know! Their support? Responses like “we re looking into it” and “it’s probably your ISP’s fault” are just not good enough.

That 99.9% uptime they re advertising is nothing but lies. I’ve had about 99.9% downtime!

If you re about to decide what host to chose, just don’t select PowWeb, and one day you’ll probably thank me!

If you don’t believe me, or you need more info, just reply here and I’m sure I’ll convince you.

They are supposed to be looking into it. Still the problems are not fixed. We still get A LOT of downtime, and mysql errors (unable to connect to database etc). This is the deal for the past 8-10 days. Wheather they re really looking into it or not, that I’m not sure. The thing is that 8-10 days downtime IS UNNACCEPTABLE! You can always take a look at their forums and see that for yourself.

And no, its not my ISP’s fault. Simply because way too many customers of theirs are experiencing the same problems. It can’t be that powweb are ok and everybody else is not, now can it?

Blame the user’s ISP seems to be a popular palm-off at POWWEB. I have personally had to deal with this several times over the past year. I’m not a customer of POWWEB but someone I provided support for was.

Slow downloads? “Must be your ISP”
Can’t load the page? “Must be your ISP” (this on a 403 generated by their web server).

Discussions with their ’support’ team continued in circles ad-nauseum. While the problem was solved eventually (>24hrs) it took much jumping up and down and me actually telling them how to fix the problem.

In my expierience stay away.

This is really very starnge to hear about PowWeb. PowWEb seemed to be quiet a recongnized company but it seems that the unsatisfied clients such can make a difference in the opinion for this company.

We are very sorry to hear the experience you had Yaba with PowWeb and thank you for sharing that with all of us here.

well, the thing is not that myself and probably 2-3 more customers are disapointed. I want to stress the fact that EVERYONE RELYING ON MySQL have had serious downtimes for the past 8-10 days. That makes us… what? maybe more than half their customers!

oh, and by the way, they changed the “99.9% uptime” moto to “99.9% infrastructure availability”, which i gues is pretty self-explanatory!!

see for yourself (still can’t post links, add h t t p://w w w. in front):
powweb.com/powweb-images/100infredund.gif

Ive been with powweb for over a year and havent had any serious problems with them yet.

Im just about to open a new website with them ill see how it goes.

It is all matter of time. May be you are not using the MySql for your web-site, but not sure about that, which is why you did not have the problem that most of the clients for PowWeb had. You can check the forums of PowWeb for this.

Go to their forums and do a search for ‘Morrow’. Read all of my posts, and if that doesn’t convince you…

Since April 11th, 2005 - Present, my site has been unavailable 566 times (FIVE HUNDRED SIXTY Six). I’ve given up on their useless phone robots who simply say, “We’ll get back to you in 24hrs” then they reply back to you with, “We’re working on it” …. ticket now closed.

Usually when I’m down, they tell me it’s my ISP or bad coding with the software I’m using.

So why haven’t I left yet? Because my data base would take me forever to move, so I just deal with it. I will say though, I have looked at a place called . From what others have told me, they’ve been really happy with the service / support. When my Powweb runs out in May, I will not renew again. I’m so unhappy with them at this point, I think I’d suffer a less painfull experience jumping out of an airplane without a parachute, and I’m not kidding.

Good luck to you guys.

I have been running my website since 1997 and after outgrowing my fourth webhost I signed up with Powweb in Oct. What a mistake. Powweb is poor at best. I’m not one to believe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence but after rolling around in Powweb’s briar patch and contending with one database error after another I’ve had enough.

Two weeks after opening a bb and picture classifieds they started doing “upgrades” and moved other users to the server I was on. Shouldn’t be a problem but they somehow managed to corrupt my database and I ending up starting over. This was after I spent hours checking and reloading all the files to correct a problem that was on their end.

And I’ve never experienced such worthless support. After I finally got somebody to answer their phone and explained what was going on their ’support’ told me they didn’t understand the problem and only admins do database support. “Fine,” I said “transfer me to an admin.” “Sorry, admins are only available by email.” they tell me. So I created a support ticket as instructed - which was NEVER answered.

I got through the initial problems and stuck it out hoping they’d get their “upgrades” taken care of. They do NOT notify you of changes or upgrades either. They will post announcements in their forum but unless you check it everyday you’re likely to get blindsided when your site goes down. Things smoothed out till around the first of the year and then it was here-we-go-again. More database problems, more errors, more headaches, no support and no answers.

They have a user forum which looks like a great idea until you realize it’s there because the only support you’re likely to get is from other users.

And today? See for yourself, I’ve made no changes but today my email is full of:

Link-ID == false, connect failed
mysql error:

mysql error number: 0

Date: Monday 23rd of May 2005 01:43:13 PM

I’ve put off planned upgrades to my website hoping Powweb would stabilize but it’s not going to happen. Powweb has managed to make my enjoyable part-time hobby website a full-time headache. It’s time to move.

We have seen that the problem with PowWeb is MySql so if you are planning to use MySql (Forums, php, cms….) Forget about PowWeb at the moment.
But as we said we experienced them with 2 sites, Garticles.net and Spamforums.net and are working great (and yes we are using MySql). Sorry for those that are not functioning well but we don’t have any problem at the moment.
